I’ll Tumble For You + Morning Long Run

I woke up around 6 am this morning. That never happens on a Saturday. :)
I decided I might as well get up, take the dog out, and prep for my long run.
I started with a cup of coconut milk and pumpkin spice coffee so I could get some Ibuprofen into my system.

I made some peanut butter Ezekiel toast with blackberry jelly and this happened…

Nigel was on a different floor, in our bedroom with the door only partially open, and snuggling with John. HE HEARD ME OPEN THE PEANUT BUTTER JAR and ran to assume the position.
Cutie face got him the jar of peanut butter since it was almost done.
John heard the ruckus and decided to join us so he got some of the toast and coffee. Two and a half hours later we were off!
I ran my first ten miler for my marathon training this morning.
I completed ten miles in 1:41 and kept a nice 9:30-10:00 minute pace throughout. John ran nine and a half miles in 1:25 and we separated around mile 2. I didn’t get into a groove until then, but once I did, the run felt good.

Around mile seven, I took a really bad spill. My foot caught on something and I flew down the sidewalk.
The run was going great until that point but after the tumble, my knees felt like someone had kicked each of them. My tights tore and favorite Lululemon running gloves tore and I kept running through the mind-numbing pain.
I wasn’t trying to be hardcore. I decided that during a marathon, I might fall, and I need to train the brain to keep going.
I came home took off my tights and apparently my knees were bleeding - in fact, I lost an inch of skin on my right knee and a quarter inch on the left knee, with some odd swelling right underneath.
So. Sexy. :D

Since John finished fast, he went and brought Nigel to come meet me and the pupper ran a quarter mile with me! That’s like a half-marathon for him because English bulldogs aren’t supposed to run for too long. He came in and decided to do some hip openers. ;D
*****
Hope you had a great morning and your weekend is ouch free.
Inspiration for my Long Run

Make 2012 great and find a race!
We just signed up for our fifth half-marathon and we are training for our fourth and fifth marathons respectively. Join us!

Setting Sights On Our Spring Marathons!

John and I have our decided on second marathon of 2012, and our spring race! We are off to Fargo, North Dakota on May 19th for the Fargo Marathon!
John and I want to be members of the 50 States, 50 Marathons Club and we wanted a smaller marathon in a state we had never been to. After combing through Runner’s World and the Runner’s World Forums we decided that Fargo was perfect for us!
Are you counting? This is John’s fifth marathon and my fourth. :D I can’t believe this even as I write it!
And yes, I am going to get a picture with the Woodchipper. That woodchipper. :D
***

Let’s talk goals and plans shall we?
John wants to run the Fargo Marathon between 4:00 and 4:05.
Mehnaz (that’s me!) wants to run the Fargo Marathon between 4:20 and 4:25.
We ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 4:27 and 4:32 respectively. I feel like our goals are both ambitious and conservative - we are hoping to create an overall improvement in our distance running so that when we run our fall marathon we reach our 2012 marathon goals!

Marathon Training Highlights & Running Bunny Weekly Report
January 16-January 22: 6.1 Miles in total!
Our marathon training started last week - I ran modest one milers but the minor skirmishes served to win the major battle which was to run four days a week.
I ended the week by running a 5K on Sunday in 30 minutes - again, a modest achievement but amazing considering after the Marine Corps Marathon I couldn’t run a third of a mile without hurting!
After racing 39.3 miles at The Goofy Challenge, I can start my base building with 5K’s! Thank you racing gods! :D
My marathon training plan is available here!
If you are interested in learning about race-training books, read my reviews here!
Highlights from my Plan?
Umm…where are the mid-week runs? I prefer an adaptive training approach like the ones featured in Advanced Marathoning or Run Faster. My three weekly runs will be a mix of 5K’s, my five miler speed test, and medium-long runs up to ten miles.
The non-negotiable factor of my marathon training are my long runs which are marked in italics - they are extremely ambitious because of my knee and because I want to do two 20 mile runs well before marathon day.

Also, five days of hot yoga, including hot yoga sculpt, is non-negotiable. I even have plans to continue with it when we are travelling! :D
We are very excited about going to Fargo, marathon training, and our new spring race! Here’s to a great running season!
Delightful Pastries + A Barefoot Running Compromise!

Our morning started bright and early with a shared strawberry-banana smoothie. In the mix: Fage 0%, strawberries, one banana, two tablespoons of instant oatmeal, and unsweetened almond milk.

We were off bright and early to take Nigel to the vet since the poor boy has allergies. There he met Juliet and her brother and they were enamored with him. I love seeing him with kids, he loves the attention!

We love our vet and she’s redone her offices - check out these puppy bottom hooks!

We dropped off Nigel at the house and decided to grab lunch at Delightful Pastries in Lincoln Park.

The bakery is cute and we started with a cozy cup of coffee.

I had a side salad and a sammie overflowing with grilled veggies, fresh tomato, red onion, provolone cheese, on a freshly baked mini-baguette. This was nomtacular.

John got saurkraut and mushroom pierogis - they were supposed to be vegetarian but came with bacon - sad, because we had hoped to share them.
The food was super late but the girl was super sweet to us - she apologized and gave us a cookie and a muffin - we only took a bite of each and out they went!

We ate in Lincoln Park to stop off at Fleet Feet for John to pick up these - the NB Minimus! John was never able to make the Vibrams work for him the way I made them work for me - I’ve raced two marathons and three half-marathons in them and he has felt uncomfortable on his training runs with his Vibrams.
John complained about the tightness and not being able to wiggle his toes. The New Balance Minimus with Vibrams sole is a great barefoot compromise shoe -when he put them on, I couldn’t believe how small they looked, they weight only seven ounces, and have a 4mm drop - vs. a 2mm drop on the Vibrams.

The second John put them on, I could tell they were a winner. He said he loved how they felt which is how I felt when I first put on my Vibrams. And snarky Marine aside, I loved running the Marine Corps Marathon in my Veebs and I think John will love running in these!
Nigel was jealous because there were no Vibrams Four Paws options. :)
Hope you are having a nice Saturday!
39.3 Memories from the 2012 Goofy Challenge
This past weekend we ran the 2012 Goofy Challenge at Disney World. I wrote up a quick post on the Donald Duck Half Marathon and the Mickey Mouse Marathon and in the tradition of my Marine Corps Marathon, here are 39.3 things I want to remember from 39.3 miles of running

1: During the Marathon, John and I stopped at the Enchanted Castle to get a picture of ourselves. There was no one there to ask to take our picture but a runner jumped out of line who was doing the Chip and Dale Marathon relay. He stopped us and asked if we wanted him to take out picture.
I am overwhelmed and continually surprised by kindnesses extended to me by strangers - this random runner saw us, got out of the pack, and took our photo in front of the Enchanted Castle.

2: I woke up at 2 am, twice, for a half-marathon and the full-marathon. That was the hardest part of the whole weekend. We went to bed nice and early but the adrenaline kept us up till 11pm! :D

3: I swore I would never complete a long distance race in full costume. Maybe ears or with funny socks but a costume? Also, I don’t do running skirts. Then I saw this adorable outfit. And one of my childhood nicknames was Minnie Mouse. So I gave in.
And as I was running 13.1 miles in this little number, people were in love with me. :D I couldn’t believe the response - runners were stopping me to tell me I looked adorable, children were running up the sides to high-five me, and after the half-marathon? We were stopped by the promo people so they could get footage of us.
On Sunday, I stood out more. Marathons attract serious runners and although there were a few bright skirts, ears, face paint, and paws, there were only a handful of full costumes. If the attention at the half was overwhelming, the attention at the full was even more surprising.
When we do any Disney race, I will always wear a costume and I will always suggest others do so. I wore my bun-hugger booty shorts and my fave Nike sports bra and had no problems with chafing. When I got hot during the marathon, I just pulled the dress down and exposed my tummy to the air.

4: And guess who joined in on the fun? John only had his Mickey hat on Saturday and when we started running through the park, a little boy saw him and started jumping up and down and screaming, “Mickey! Mickey!” John gave him a high-give and was grinning ear to ear as we kept running.
After the half, John saw these paws and said he would love to wear them for the marathon. And he did. The WHOLE MARATHON - even when the temps went up. If you think my costume was a hit, paired with John’s paws, we were a super hit. I never knew he would be excited about wearing a costume to the Goofy Challenge and he really wants to dress up with Goofy ears in future marathons.
5: We ran the half in 2:21 - we stopped a ton to take photos but I love that with a lot less effort, I busted out my old personal record for a half-marathon with a lot more ease. We stopped even more during the full marathon (longer course, more scenery, more characters) and finished in 5:58. We exceeded our goal and completed the race in 8 hours and 19 minutes. Next time? Seven hours.
Eight hours and 19 minutes hours in a Minnie Mouse Costume and pink Vibrams (and John in large paws and Mickey ears).

6: I didn’t want to stop them while they were running, but I will never forget this duo. I loved how she tenderly attended to him at the water stations and he kept his hand on her arm for the five or six miles we saw them. We separated around mile 7 and when I looked behind me, I realized they were smiling.

7: John calls me his Honey Badger runner - in race photos of me, I tend to focus on the finish line and just keep moving. I love this picture from the marathon that John got when I was running. Do you see what I see? That’s a smile when I’m running. Not required but always nice!

8: I finished the 2011 Donald Duck Half-Marathon at a slow time of 2:50. This year, we finished in 2:21. What was striking about this difference was that we ran most of the race in the dark - we finished with sunlight only because we stopped to get some pictures. The faster you run the race, the more likely you are to see fewer characters and the more likely that the first two hours of the race will be pitch black. I’m conflicted about this because it is so fun to run the race with the park buzzing around you - but it’s also fun to run through Disney in the dark!

9: My 13.1 split at the Marine Corps Marathon was 2:13, and my personal record for the distance at the Chicago Half Marathon was 2:20. My Donald Duck Half Marathon was 2:21, but it was MUCH MUCH easier for me than either previous race, even with the fact I had to stop and sprint to get photos. I truly believe I will run a two hour half marathon this year.

10: When I got my results, I made this face. It was well-deserved, I’m bad ass.
11: We had assigned corals but before the half we went the wrong way and John didn’t want to find our way back because we were close to the G and H corrals.
Then we realized that Corral D, where we were assigned, started more than twenty minutes before the open G and H corrals. We talked to a lovely woman from Chicago, who convinced us to jump the line and join our corrals - I am always afraid of breaking rules because I never get away with anything.
Michelle G, thank you for holding down the barricade for us and telling us to go join our corral - you saved our legs twenty minutes (almost thirty!) and gave us much good karma.

12: Around the 4 hour 30 minute mark of the marathon, I turned to John and said, “Umm…how the fxck did I finish the Marine Corps in this time?”
His response, “I don’t know babe, maybe because running a half-marathon before a marathon is hard? And maybe because you didn’t stop to take four pictures with a bunch of rabbits and a donkey?”
Smart Ass.
13: I peed a lot. And only once in a porta-potty. I don’t want to talk about it. I thought I found a great hiding place once and it wasn’t when the monorail full of people went above me. I really don’t want to talk about it.
Except to say, I prefer running a little dehydrated.
14: I met a woman who has completed 106 marathons. One day that will be me.
15: The marathon was hard - we’re not used to stopping and starting, and taking pictures brought on an inevitable crash - at mile 15, I started crying because I never experienced a wall during the Marine Corps Marathon but I did then. John turned to me and said, “Honey badgers don’t cry. Honey badgers don’t give a shit. Honey badger ran two marathons yesterday!” It didn’t lift the wall, but it made me laugh.
16: Last year, I stopped to go to the men’s bathroom and met this sweet ski instructor dressed as Peter Pan, who joined me in my wait for the shortest bathroom line ever. She ran a mile with us - her parting words, “you two need to have fun - you are doing great, stop being so intense!”
Guess who we saw again and guess what she was dressed as?
The same woman! And she was dressed as the cat from Alice in Wonderland, down to the red contacts in her eyes.
17: Towards mile 23, John said if we didn’t pick it up, we wouldn’t make a six hour marathon (guaranteeing our goal). Somewhere in there, I ran an 8:20 mile after running 22 miles before, so we could cross the line at 5:58. I couldn’t have done this without John encouraging me - I thought my eyes were bleeding, I was so warm and so worried we wouldn’t make it.
18: I was mean to some walkers at the end and I am sorry about this - I have no memory of the last three miles except the feeling that my skin was on fire. Towards the end of the race, walkers cluster, spread out, and become much less aware of everyone. I was weaving in and out so we could make our time and John said he overheard me say pretty sharply, “walkers over there!” I don’t have one recollection of this and I hope the person who heard it will feel my apology karma - I don’t want anyone to have a bad memory of the end of their marathon and I hope they understand I was running on three brain cells and a Clif gel.

19: The Donald Duck Half Marathon medal was refurbed for the anniversary - so cute right?

20: And let’s not forget the rest of the bling!

21: I didn’t get to meet Chip and Dale during the races - we didn’t see them at the Half and during the Marathon? The line was thirty people long!
But we found them after!

22: Even John was excited. And yes, that’s my manly boyfriend hugging Dale.
23: Yes, I wore running gear all day at the parks - guess who forgot to pack more then one outfit? And those are my brand new pink compression socks - they keep my legs feeling like new!

24: The start of Disney races is an event to behold. Fireworks for every wave. Then flames shoot up overhead as you start running which is awesome because it warms your buns right before you start running. Then there’s this. Dear Disney - I am one of those runners who would pay a fee to get a photo with Mickey, Donald, and Goofy in their running gear. I really would.

25: We may or may not have practiced how John would drink at aid stations with his mouse paws.

26: I get messages asking me why I don’t post pictures of myself running in races. Because most people look like shit when they are running. And when I was running my 4:30 marathon, I really looked like shit. But here’s a blurry picture of me running so you can’t tell how I look. Watch that awesome strike though - no heels here. :D
27: We are pain-free. Yes, we are sore, yes, we aren’t running ten miles today. No sharp, stabbing pains. What a difference.
28: T-Shirt: “I lost 100 lbs and this is my first eleventh half-marathon!”
29: As I was running, a taller Minnie Mouse in front of John and I turns to her Mickey Mouse husband and says, “Look, it’s a younger, in-shape, and better-looking version of us! I’ve had three kids so I don’t know if I would be wearing your Minnie dress.” She looked pretty great so I’m not sure what she was talking about and when I have three kids, I hope I have the time management skills to train for marathons.

30: At Animal Kingdom, I may or may not have lost three minutes trying to pose with these rabbits, Will and Annette.

31: Also at Animal Kingdom, I saw my first baby armadillo, and met a cranky owl who gave me side-eye. They brought out several owls, donkeys, sheep, and dogs. Yes, this is why we didn’t have a 5:30 marathon, and I don’t care.

32: I just love these pictures of John.

33: This is a really pretty spot to get pictures of runners but it was pretty dark when we ran by. So I went back and recreated my running moment for you.

34: When I met Belle, this happened: “I looked for you on the race course because yours was the first Disney movie I saw in the theatre, and I loved it, and I was so sad you weren’t at the Marathon, and I’ve seen Beauty and the Beast a 1000 times, and I’m too old for this but I’m still getting my picture with you and this is really exciting for me.” Poor Belle.

35: After both races, John was walking around like he just went around the park. If you looked at John you wouldn’t have known he ran 39 miles. Expect to hear great things about his running adventures this year!

36: I was a little bit more disheveled looking - whew, hot races! And yes, I even lost my hair tie somewhere at the end. Compare that to my face after the half-marathon, and you can really see why no cameras were running after me after the full marathon! :D

37: Most runners show you a picture of their race prep piles. Let me show you a picture of us doing yoga in our costumes.
38: I will forever remember how John said, “I am amazed by you,” after I ran my heart out to make sure we ran under six hours for our goal. I like racing alone but at mile 15, I remember thinking, I will never race the Goofy Challenge without John.

39.3: Happy New Year. How has your year been so far? I hope it has been as lucky and super as mine.
“Gawrsh!”

It takes guts to put your goals out on your blog. It puts more pressure on you and there’s always the chance you won’t meet your goals and have to put your disappointment out there.
And then there’s the wonderful chance you will find success and get to share that with everyone.
Our goals for the Goofy Challenge in 2012 was to cut one hour off our previous time: ”In 2012, we want to finish 39.3 miles in 8.5 hours total - roughly a 2 hour and 30 minute half-marathon and a 6 hour marathon!”
We surpassed our goal. On Saturday, we finished the half-marathon in 2 hours and 21 minutes, down from 2 hours and 50 minutes in 2011 with much faster running so we could take pictures. On Sunday, we finished the full marathon in 5 hours and 58 minutes, down from 6 hours and 38 minutes! We’ve had big Goofy smiles all day today!
One Down, One To Go!

In 2011, when we completed the Donald Duck Half Marathon, I completed it in 2:50 and John in 2:54, because he was running back and forth for ten minutes looking for me because we got seperated.
In 2012, we came into the race telling ourselves to have fun - imagining there was no way we’ve be able to finish with a great time: we ran at a nice pace, took pictures, kissed in the Enchanted castle, I took time to wee on the Disney golf course (emergency!), and I high-fived everyone and every character.
And we finished in 2:21, only 40 seconds slower then my personal best half-marathon at the Chicago half-marathon - and almost 30 minutes faster than last year’s Donald Duck Half, with a lot less effort and a lot more fun! What a difference a year makes!
This half reminded me why I love running and why I love racing.
The Rules + Pre-Race Jitters + Day 5 of 365 Abs Routines

Following My Rules for Carb Loading for a Marathon, I eat a veggie pizza (spinach, red peppers, onions, mushroom, garlic slivers, a dusting of vegetarian feta, and banana peppers for John) two days before my race. After this, I just switch to bagels and Larabars to prevent any tummy upsets.
I have a serious case of pre-Goofy Challenge jitters.
My goals for the race are to have fun and to take a picture with Princess Jasmine and Chip and Dale because it was a pretty cold race last year and Princess Jasmine and Ariel weren’t out and about - and the one Princess Jasmine I saw had a floor length coat - WTW?

I wanted an easy-peasy abs routine tonight but somehow that didn’t happen. :D
John’s Routine, Routine 5
Set timer for 30 seconds. Assume sit-up position and lift up, pressing lower back into the floor, keeping elbows wide, and chin pointed towards the ceiling. Pulse until timer goes off. Repeat eight times, preferably with no rest breaks. Um…I needed rest breaks. :D
******

We’re packed and I’m trying to fall asleep - we have a red-eye flight and I am waking up in five hours. I’m getting extra snuggles in with this guy - I’ll admit it, I wish my dog could come to races with me.
Resolutions are Awesome: 12 for 2012
I think resolutions are awesome. They help me dream and scheme brilliant adventures and they made 2011 a beautiful year - and will hopefully bring luck to 2012!
In 2012, I will run a 3:55 to 4:00 hour marathon.
I will run a 1:55 to 2:00 half marathon.
I will complete a Tough Mudder weekend race - possibly running both the Saturday and Sunday races for a super challenge!

John and I will completed our fitness streak: 365 Abs routines: one a day, every day in 2012!

I started it a wee early but 2012 is the official IOnlyWearDresses Yoga-Pose-of-the-Month challenge.
Every month, I will focus on conquering or refining one intermediate or advanced level pose - in January, I hope to complete a full split or Monkey pose by January 31!
I will complete 200 hours of hot yoga classes this year.

John and I will plan our next international adventure!
I will read three books a month.
I will study one photography technique book a month.
I will review and taste twelve new champagnes for The Champagne Diaries.
I will plan one date night a month for John - he beats me every week planning creative dates and I will bring it with twelve super fun dates this year!
I will see six operas this year. In 2011, I was lucky enough to enjoy The Damnation of Faust and The Tales of Hoffman. Opera is my secret love and I hope to see at least six different shows this year!
2011 Adventures!

We completed our first Goofy Challenge and I went to Disney World for the first time. And in 5 days, we will be running 39.3 miles again for our second one!

This was seriously the most exciting moment of my life - I love Chip and Dale!

Our little family grew when we brought Nigel Bear Milhous home.

We went to California to visit friends and ran the America’s Finest City half marathon with them in San Diego!

I got back on the mat - transferring my practice from Hatha and Bikram to a fusion vinyasa at Core Power. My practice was invigorated by Hot Yoga and I am continually inspired by Tara Stiles - there is a yoga practice for everyone!

I made my first Lovesgiving dinner!!

I switched to running in my pink Vibrams and ran two half marathons, a 20 mile race, and a full marathon in them! In total, this year John and I raced 124 miles!

We went to Moscow and St. Petersburg. I can’t believe I’ve seen Russia - never in my wildest dreams did I imagine ever seeing the land of Tolstoy.

We ran the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. and had a lot of success!

We went to Ohio so Nigel could meet his grandparents and great-grandparents and then went back two more times!

We ran the Newton Ready to Run 20 Miler to train for our marathon!

We celebrated four years together!
This first picture is from our second date - we look like children! :D

We enjoyed famous cupcakes from Georgetown Cupcakes after the Marine Corps Marathon - they lived up to their reputation!

We celebrated our first Christmas with Nigel Bear!
2011 was a great year and I hope 2012 will be the best ever with many more adventures!
